Education

MA in Danish language and literature, and BA in German language and literature in 1987 (University of Copenhagen). PH.D. in linguistics and computational Linguistics in 1997 (Odense University (Now: University of Southern Denmark)).

Working Experience

From 1987 -1992 researcher at EUROTRA-DK, the Danish branch of the EU’s research and development project in machine translation. Project coordinator for the development of the Danish analysis and synthesis grammars and German to Danish translation modules. Member of the pragmatics group established as a central team acting as consultants for researchers and implementers in the other 8 EU countries.

PH.D. scholarship at Odense University 1992 - 1995.

Dictionary consultant for GAD’s publishing company. Consultant for CRI A/S and Price Waterhouse Coopers for the evaluation of the EU-programme LINGUA.

Employed at the Department of Computational Linguistics at the Copenhagen Business School 1995-2006. Assistant Professor in 1995, Associate Professor in 1998, Head of Department since 1999.  

Programme Director of the Master of Language Administration programme(MLA) 1999-2006.

May 2000-2002 member of the advisory group for the Danish ministry of research ('IT in Danish'). Since January 2001 reviewer for the ELRA scientific committee and the Norwegian Research Council.

Member of the board of HHE (Handelshøjskolens Efteruddannelsescenter) from 2002-2005.

Member of the City Council of the Municipality of Farum from 2000-2006, chairman of the Committee for Employment and Integration (since 2003) and several other committees of the municipality. Head of the section of the local Social Democrats.

Since november 2004 member of DEA’s (Dansk Erhvervsakademi/Danish Research Academi) specialist panel on language technology.

Director of the Danish Language Council since May 2006.

BA , MLA and MA courses in machine translation, corpus linguistics, natural language processing, programming in Prolog, natural language semantics, syntax and morphology, HTML and XML mark-up. VIA (Visual Interactive Analysis, 1994-1996 and 2003-2004): a language and theory independent interactive grammar training program for language students. The programme is currently being used at CBS and a number of schools in Denmark and has received additional funding for further extension. CLE-DK (The Core Language Engine in Danish 1996-1998). Coorperation with SRI International, Cambridge and Telia Research AB. Conducting a semiautomatic conversion of grammars and dictionaries for Swedish into Danish to create a Danish – English – Swedish version of the Spoken Language Translator (SLT). Results reported in Rayner et al. (1997)

LATER (Language Technology Erasmus Mundus Programme, 2005-2006). Proposal to enhance attractiveness selected under Action 4 - Selection 2004 of the Erasmus Mundus programme. The project focuses on making European higher education in Computational Linguistics and Language Technology attractive to students and scholars from third countries. “LATER” provides for the organisation of workshops and conferences, as well as the development of distance learning tools, and distance education. In cooperation with Universität des Saarlandes, Germany, Univerzita Karlova v Praze, Czech Republic, University of Malta, Malta. Funding: EU Erasmus Mundus Programme. Role: Partner and local coordinator.   

FOVITS (Netværket om FOrskningsbaseret Videreuddannelse i IT og Sprog, 2005). The project intends to develop research based continuing education activities.  Role: participant.

SDMT (Statistical Dependency-based Machine Translation, 2004-2007): Development of resources, such as a parallel Danish-English dependency treebank, and machine learning algorithms for machine translation.
